This fellowship is designed for anesthesiologists who wish to gain experience in simulation education and pursue an academic career as a clinician educator. The overarching goal is to provide a foundational overview of simulation and medical education, and to incorporate these concepts into current practice. Fellows will have been introduced to these concepts through multiple opportunities, including designing and delivering anesthesia crisis resource management (ACRM) curriculum for post graduate medical learners at the Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre, Unity Health Toronto.

Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management (ACRM)

The ACRM course trains technical and non-technical skills in managing diverse anesthesia crisis scenarios. Our simulation centre hosts this 4-hour course from the Department of Anesthesia, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, weekly from September to May each year, training Anesthesia residents from PGY1-PGY4. This program is supported through the Department of Anesthesia’s Fellowship program, with 2 new Fellows being trained annually in simulation best practices.

The department of Anesthesia’s Post Graduate Simulation at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine leads their PGY 3-5 residents through an assessment of skills using simulation. Our Centre was the first in Ontario to host the CanNASC assessment and is now one of two in the province.

The College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario utilizes our simulation program to host their entry-to-practice competency assessment for internationally trained applicants, supporting their pathway to Canadian respiratory therapy practice.

The department of Emergency Medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto hosts its core simulation curriculum for their PGY 1-5 learners at the Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre, including their transition to discipline curriculum and OSATs.

Hosted for a full day in the centre each year, this curriculum involves multiple stations to hone incoming medical residents’ procedural skills.

Our simulation program hosts numerous different simulation sessions for the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, including OSATS, transition to residency as well as psychomotor skills labs and complex obstetric simulation scenarios.

Offered to our undergraduate medical clerks to provide an orientation and introduction to important surgical topics and skills.

These procedural skills sessions allow senior respirology postgraduate residents to practice key procedures for their specialty using porcine tissue, including chest tube insertion and diagnostic bronchoscopy.

This annual conference brings emergency physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses and other health care practitioners from around the world to participate in a 4-day simulation intensive conference.

Objectives for the SEAD program are to generate interest in surgical specialties like Neurology, Urology and General, and to introduce basic surgical skills for Undergraduate Medical Students. Trainees rotate at different stations that include trauma simulations, basic and laparoscopic suturing, chest tube insertion, burr hole drilling, cystoscopy and ureterostomy.

TTC is designed to support medical students’ transition from second year to third year of medical school. Encompassing a variety of foundational hands on skills, TTC helps medical students become more confident and bridge the gap between academic and clinical learning.

Hosted throughout the academic year, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate TEAM curriculum is designed to expose undergraduate medical students to the fundamentals in trauma evaluation and management.
